Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009 Review

Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009 is one of the more expensive security products on the market, but it is also one of the most effective at detecting and blocking malicious programs currently in circulation, and has the benefit of an easy to use interface that will suit all computer skill levels.

Norton 2009 has extensive malware detection capabilities, and will scan your computer thoroughly for spyware, trojans, adware, worms and other harmful programs, but no single Internet security package can tackle all the hundreds of variations of malware currently on the market, and Norton falls just slightly behind G-Data Internet Security 2010 and BitDefender Internet Security 2009 in the first stages of detecting malware.  However Norton is highly effective at cleaning malware off systems, and wipes false registry changes and files without effecting safe software entries.

The 2009 update has a new feature called ‘pulse’, a fast response approach which involves automatic 5-15 minute virus updates to protect your system against newly identified malware attacks

One problem with having such an effective Internet Security system is that in the past is the scanning feature could be very slow, taking up valuable CPU space when you are trying to use your computer for other tasks, creating slow running speeds especially on older systems.  Norton have improved this by introducing the ‘Insight’ feature, which can recognised safe applications that do not need to be checked with every scan, and this has significantly improved scanning speeds without compromising on security.

One drawback of the Norton Internet Security 2009 package is that is does include an up to date back up facility, which means you will not be able to scan for Window’s patches and missing applications, functions that are included in many of the competitive Internet security products.  Also the privacy and parental control features must be downloaded separately as an add on, and although this is free it would have been helpful if it had been included as part of the main product.
